Bhopal, Indore to Get National Mobility Card

The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) has reinitiated efforts to implement the ‘one nation, one card’ system, known as the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). This interoperable transport card aims to streamline public transport ticketing services across Bhopal and Indore, facilitating a unified travel experience.

The NCMC project, which offers multifaceted utility beyond mere transport ticketing, marks a strategic advantage for MPMRCL, given that the metro system is in its nascent stage of development. The ability to incorporate such an advanced system from the outset provides a significant operational edge. Previous attempts to integrate this system within Bhopal’s city bus network faced substantial challenges, primarily due to the difficulties in transitioning from an existing financial setup.

Initially proposed in October 2023 and revisited in February of this year, the initiative gained traction following the announcement by Bhopal City Link Limited (BCLL), a BMC subsidiary. However, BCLL’s efforts were hampered by the inability to secure Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode participation and the complexities associated with migrating to a new transactional platform. While the BCLL proposal was valued at approximately Rs 10 crore for a fleet of 250 buses, the MPMRCL’s comprehensive plan is estimated at Rs 230 crore. In a renewed push, MPMRCL has invited institutions to provide services related to the Open Loop NCMC, transaction acquiring, and Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) integration. The ambitious project scope includes the completion of 57 metro stations across Indore and Bhopal within a 200-week timeframe, followed by a 364-week service period that encompasses defect liability and comprehensive maintenance.

The financial underpinning of this initiative will be supported by equity contributions from both the Union and state governments. The NCMC and EMV cards, along with various payment portals, will act as the primary fare media, streamlining transactions for merchants using debit, credit, and prepaid card reader hardware or terminals. The Bhopal Metro Rail Project, identified as a National Priority City by the Union government, is yet to commence passenger operations. This project, alongside the Indore Metro, aims to significantly enhance the public transport landscape in both cities. Currently, public transport in these areas is limited to buses, the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), autorickshaws, app-based cabs, and private rental taxi services.

The introduction of the NCMC is poised to revolutionise urban mobility in Madhya Pradesh. By providing a seamless, integrated payment solution, it promises to improve commuter convenience and operational efficiency. The initiative reflects a broader trend towards smart city solutions, aligning with the national vision of enhanced urban infrastructure. As the MPMRCL progresses with this initiative, it underscores the importance of modern, efficient, and integrated public transport systems. This development is a critical step towards realising the potential of urban mobility solutions that cater to the evolving needs of the populace, ensuring a smoother, more connected travel experience across Bhopal and Indore.
