Bengaluru Water Loss Spurs Search For Smarter Fixes
Bengaluru’s water utility is looking to technology-led solutions to tackle high levels of water loss across the city’s distribution network, with startups being considered for tools that can detect leaks and improve monitoring. The move highlights a growing infrastructure challenge: as Bengaluru’s demand for water rises, reducing losses from existing pipelines could be as important as developing additional sources.
The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board is exploring ways to identify leaks and non-revenue water, which refers to treated water that enters a distribution system but does not generate corresponding revenue because of physical losses, unauthorised use or measurement gaps. For a water-stressed city, reducing this gap can increase the effective supply available to consumers without extracting more water from already pressured sources. The utility has indicated that it wants to work with startups and technology providers that can offer practical solutions for detecting leaks and improving network efficiency. Potential technologies could include sensors, pressure monitoring, acoustic detection, data analytics and digital mapping. The usefulness of these tools, however, will depend on whether they can operate effectively across Bengaluru’s ageing and complex underground network. Water leakage is particularly significant because losses occur before water reaches homes and businesses. A pipeline carrying treated water can lose substantial volumes through cracks, damaged joints, pressure fluctuations or ageing infrastructure. Locating these failures quickly is difficult because much of the network is underground and spread across a large metropolitan area.
Technology can help shift the system from reactive repairs to predictive maintenance. Instead of waiting for visible leaks or major pipe failures, utilities can use changes in pressure, flow and other indicators to identify sections where a problem may be developing. That could reduce repair time and limit the amount of treated water lost. But technology is not a substitute for physical network investment. Bengaluru’s water system requires regular pipeline replacement, pressure management, accurate metering and better asset records. A sophisticated monitoring platform cannot deliver significant savings if detected leaks cannot be repaired quickly or if the underlying network remains poorly mapped. There is also a strong climate-resilience case for reducing water losses. Bengaluru faces increasing pressure on its water resources, while rainfall is becoming more variable and demand continues to rise. Every unit of treated water saved within the distribution network reduces the energy and treatment resources required to replace it. For households, better leakage management could also improve supply reliability. Reducing losses can create additional system capacity without immediately depending on new large-scale water infrastructure, although savings would need to be demonstrated through transparent measurements rather than assumptions. The startup approach could provide the utility with access to newer monitoring technologies without requiring every solution to be developed internally.
However, any procurement model should include clear performance targets, data protection standards, independent verification and measurable reductions in water losses.Bengaluru’s water challenge is ultimately a network-efficiency problem as much as a supply problem. Finding and fixing leaks faster could become one of the city’s most practical routes towards a more resilient water system, provided digital innovation is paired with sustained investment in the pipes beneath the city.
