The Karnataka Cabinet has approved an additional ₹1,118.50 crore to speed up the Bengaluru ring road project, a 134-km road network intended to improve connectivity around the city and ease traffic pressure on its outer areas.
The project runs from Anekal through Sarjapur, Varthur, the airport and Nelamangala. It was approved in 2017 and is being implemented by the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL). The state government said the extra funding was required to complete the remaining works.
Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda told reporters that the increase in project cost was mainly caused by higher land acquisition expenses, price escalation, delays and additional works added during implementation. The Cabinet has approved the additional allocation on the basis of the need to complete the long-pending road project.
The government said the ring road is expected to play a significant role in managing traffic congestion around Bengaluru. It will create links between Hoskote and Nelamangala, connect the airport with surrounding parts of the metropolitan region, and provide a route from Bidadi through Varthur to Sarjapur.
The project includes a 1.92-km elevated corridor at Varthur, where traffic congestion has remained a major concern. The elevated section is planned as part of the road package to address movement through the heavily congested area.
Several railway crossing flyovers are also included in the project. These are planned at Gollahalli, Basavanahalli, Rajanukunte, Narayanapura, Kadugodi and Varthur Junction to improve the safety and continuity of traffic movement across railway intersections.
The Cabinet expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in completing the works and directed the officials concerned to finish the pending construction at the earliest, according to the minister. The government said the wider road network would strengthen transport links in Bengaluru’s peripheral areas and support development activity along the connected corridors.
The additional allocation places the project’s completion on a faster administrative track, but the source report does not specify a revised completion date, the total revised project cost, the amount already spent or the status of individual packages. The next milestone will be the execution of the remaining works under the approved additional funding.
