The Karnataka Cabinet has approved an additional ₹1,118.50 crore to complete Bengaluru’s 134-km ring road project, a major road network intended to ease traffic on the city’s expanding outskirts. The approval follows delays and rising project costs linked to land acquisition, inflation and additional works added during implementation.
Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda told reporters that the additional funding had been sanctioned to expedite the project, which was originally approved in 2017. The cabinet has also expressed dissatisfaction over the delay and directed the officials concerned to complete the remaining works at the earliest, he said.
The ring road is planned to connect Anekal with Sarjapur, Varthur, Kempegowda International Airport and Nelamangala. The proposed network is expected to improve links between Hoskote and Nelamangala and the airport, as well as between Bidadi, Varthur and Sarjapur.
According to the report, the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited is implementing the project. The additional allocation became necessary as the cost of land acquisition increased, prices rose, construction was delayed and extra works were incorporated while the project was being executed.
One of the key components is a 1.92-km elevated corridor at Varthur, an area that experiences heavy traffic. The elevated section is intended to address long-standing congestion in the Varthur area and form part of the larger ring road network.
The project will also include railway crossing flyovers at Gollahalli, Basavanahalli, Rajanukunte, Narayanapura, Kadugodi and Varthur Junction. These structures are planned to improve the safety and movement of vehicles at locations where road traffic intersects with railway infrastructure.
The cabinet’s decision places the project’s cost escalation and delayed execution at the centre of its latest intervention. While the additional grant is intended to enable completion of the pending work, the source report does not specify the revised total project cost, the amount already spent or a final completion date.
The ring road is being positioned by the state government as an important part of Bengaluru’s outer transport network. Its proposed connections cover residential, industrial and airport-linked growth areas, where rising development has increased pressure on existing roads. The next stated step is for the authorities to accelerate and complete the remaining construction works.
