Bengaluru, one of India’s busiest and rapidly developing cities, is facing a disturbing surge in triple riding cases. In 2024 alone, a staggering 1,49,694 incidents were reported, highlighting an ongoing threat to road safety and public health. This dangerous practice, which sees three people riding on a single two-wheeler, not only violates traffic laws but also exacerbates the risk of severe accidents, especially when helmets are not worn. The city’s traffic system, already strained by congestion, is further burdened by these overloaded vehicles, making road travel more perilous for all involved.

The increase in triple riding incidents over the past three years is particularly alarming. In 2022, Bengaluru recorded 1,62,617 cases, followed by 1,17,738 in 2023. The rise of over 30% in 2024 underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement and public awareness. A recent tragedy underscored the deadly consequences of this practice. A 19-year-old student, Mohammed Nahidur Rahman, lost his life when the two-wheeler he was riding on collided with an autorickshaw. The accident, which took place on BGS flyover, left Rahman with fatal head injuries. Tragically, none of the riders were wearing helmets, further aggravating the severity of the crash.

While such accidents are heart-wrenching, they are not isolated. In fact, the widespread nature of this issue has made enforcement of traffic rules more difficult. According to Bengaluru’s traffic police, violators often evade penalties by spotting enforcement officers from a distance, making swift U-turns to escape. “Youngsters engage in triple riding purely for the thrill of it, disregarding the risks involved,” said a senior traffic official. This risky behaviour is not confined to teenagers; even adults indulge in it, ignoring the long-term consequences of their actions.

The growing problem of triple riding is not just a matter of reckless behaviour; it also exacerbates the already congested traffic conditions in Bengaluru. The overloading of two-wheelers contributes to road blockages and delays, reducing the efficiency of the city’s urban transport network. Traffic officials have sought to address these challenges through advanced technology, notably Artificial Intelligence (AI), which aids in capturing violations. AI cameras can now automatically detect triple riding, allowing for more efficient enforcement and quicker resolution of violations. However, the rising number of violations suggests that AI alone may not be enough to curb this dangerous trend. Public education campaigns, particularly in schools and colleges, are also crucial to fostering long-term behavioural change.

From a sustainability perspective, the unchecked rise in triple riding presents another layer of urban challenge. Beyond the immediate road safety concerns, the overuse of two-wheelers for carrying multiple riders increases fuel consumption and carbon emissions, contributing to air pollution and the city’s growing environmental footprint. Sustainable urban development requires not only better traffic management but also a commitment to reducing the environmental impact of urban mobility. Educating the public about the environmental and safety risks associated with triple riding is essential to building a safer and more sustainable city.
