Bengaluru Pune Air Link Exposes Urban Mobility Gap
Bengaluru and Pune are only about 741 km apart by air, yet reaching the final destination after landing can take almost as long as the flight itself. A recent journey from Pune airport to Baner took around 90 minutes for an 18-km trip, highlighting how weak last-mile connectivity can undermine the time savings created by fast intercity air links.
The contrast is striking. A flight from Bengaluru reached Pune in roughly 80 minutes, while the onward road journey consumed another one-and-a-half hours. The experience points to a wider urban mobility problem: airport infrastructure can deliver high-speed regional connections, but the value of that connectivity depends heavily on what happens after passengers leave the terminal.Pune’s Lohegaon airport sits relatively close to several established neighbourhoods, but road congestion, uneven road conditions and unpredictable travel times can make access difficult. Frequent flyers have reportedly begun building substantial buffers into their journeys, with some leaving home several hours before scheduled departures to reduce the risk of being delayed on the road. For businesses, the issue extends beyond passenger inconvenience. Pune and Bengaluru are major technology, manufacturing and services centres, with significant movement of employees, clients and business travellers between the two cities. Unreliable airport access increases the effective cost of travel by adding time that cannot be planned with confidence.
The challenge also exposes the limitations of a road-first approach to urban mobility.Expanding road capacity can provide relief at specific bottlenecks, but it does not necessarily create predictable journeys when demand continues to grow. Transport planners increasingly assess mobility through the entire journey rather than individual infrastructure projects. Public transport therefore becomes important to the airport equation. Better connections between the airport, employment districts and major residential areas could reduce dependence on private cars and taxis while making travel times more consistent. A sustainable airport-access network should also provide practical options for passengers without private vehicles, including women, older travellers and people with mobility constraints. The Bengaluru-Pune corridor illustrates a broader lesson for fast-growing Indian cities. High-speed aviation can compress intercity travel to little more than an hour, but fragmented urban transport can give back much of that advantage on the ground.
For Pune, improving airport access will require more than another road project. Coordinated public transport, dependable road maintenance, better traffic management and stronger connections to major activity centres can make the airport more useful to the wider city. The measure of connectivity, ultimately, is not how quickly an aircraft lands, but how reliably people can complete the journey.
