Bengaluru is preparing to introduce stricter parking controls at some of its most congested junctions, with the aim of freeing road space and improving traffic movement. The proposed changes come as the city grapples with recurring bottlenecks caused not only by vehicle volumes but also by cars parked or stopped along already constrained roads.
The policy could improve mobility, but its success will depend on enforcement and the availability of practical alternatives for drivers. The proposed measures focus on junctions where roadside parking and stopping activity contribute to traffic build-up. Under the plan, parking would be restricted around selected high-congestion locations, allowing more carriageway space to remain available for moving traffic. The issue illustrates a common problem in dense urban areas: road capacity can be reduced significantly without any physical construction. A row of parked vehicles can narrow a traffic lane, interfere with turning movements and create conflicts between cars, buses, two-wheelers, pedestrians and delivery vehicles.
