Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Date Still Awaits Final Nod

The proposed Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper train could become South India’s first service of its kind, but its reported October 10 or 11 launch remains subject to final confirmation from the Railway Board, according to a report by Vijay Karnataka.

The service is expected to connect Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal Bengaluru (SMVT) with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai through an overnight operation. The report says Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw may inaugurate the train in Bengaluru over the coming weekend, although it does not cite a public Railway Ministry notification confirming the date.

The proposed train would address one of the longest inter-city rail journeys between Bengaluru and Mumbai. The existing journey can take about 22 to 24 hours, while the proposed sleeper service is expected to reduce the travel time substantially. Vijay Karnataka reports an estimated journey time of 16 hours and five minutes from Bengaluru to Mumbai, and 15 hours and 45 minutes in the reverse direction.

According to the report, the train could leave Bengaluru at 7.50 pm and reach Mumbai at 11.55 am the following day. The return service is expected to depart Mumbai at 8.10 pm and reach Bengaluru at 11.55 am the next morning. The service is reportedly planned to operate six days a week, but these timings have not yet been confirmed through an official timetable.

The proposed route would pass through Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune and Kalyan, with stops at these locations. The report identifies the proposed train numbers as 27651 and 27652. These details also require confirmation in the final operating schedule issued by the railway authorities.

The train is expected to use a 16-coach Vande Bharat sleeper set manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited. The report says two Vande Bharat trains may be transferred to South Western Railway, whose headquarters are in Bengaluru. The sleeper configuration is designed for overnight travel, with berths and passenger facilities intended to provide greater comfort than a conventional seated inter-city service.

For passengers, the principal change would be the ability to travel overnight between two major metropolitan regions while avoiding a full day on the train. The proposed intermediate stops could also improve connections for cities and districts along the Bengaluru-Karnataka-Maharashtra corridor. However, the final passenger benefit will depend on the confirmed fare structure, frequency, stoppage pattern and punctuality of the service.

The supplied report states that the Railway Board has not yet issued its final announcement on the inauguration date, schedule and fares. Until those details are formally released, the October 10 or 11 launch should be treated as a reported proposal rather than a confirmed railway service milestone. The next definitive update would be an official notification from the Railway Ministry, Railway Board or the concerned railway zones.
