Bengaluru’s footpath design is drawing renewed attention after concerns that pedestrians walking along busy roads can become vulnerable to sudden vehicle movements and street-level crime. The debate goes beyond policing: broken or poorly protected pedestrian spaces can push people closer to moving traffic and create conditions where walking becomes less predictable and less safe.

The discussion centres on the protection of pavements along busy corridors. Where footpaths are obstructed by parked vehicles, vendors, utility infrastructure or missing barriers, pedestrians can be forced onto carriageways or narrow edges of the road.This increases exposure to fast-moving vehicles while reducing the separation between people walking and traffic. The issue has a particular relevance for people carrying bags, older residents, children and those travelling on foot to nearby bus stops or Metro stations. A footpath is not simply a strip of concrete alongside a road; it is basic mobility infrastructure that determines whether people can move through neighbourhoods without entering vehicle space. Urban safety specialists have increasingly argued that street design can complement conventional enforcement. Physical separation between pedestrians and traffic, controlled access points, adequate lighting and unobstructed walking surfaces can reduce opportunities for dangerous vehicle-pedestrian interactions. Such interventions also improve everyday comfort for people who depend on walking. For Bengaluru, this is closely connected to the city’s public transport ambitions. Metro stations and bus corridors can only function as accessible mobility systems if passengers can safely complete the first and last part of their journey on foot. Poor footpaths can therefore weaken the practical reach of otherwise major transport investments. There is also an economic dimension.

Streets that are easy and safe to walk can support local shops and small businesses by making commercial areas more accessible. Conversely, roads where pedestrians constantly negotiate parked vehicles, traffic and broken pavements can discourage walking and reduce the quality of the public realm. Physical barriers must nevertheless be designed carefully. Bollards or barricades can prevent vehicles from entering pedestrian areas, but poorly placed structures may reduce accessibility for wheelchair users, people with mobility difficulties and parents using prams. A people-first approach requires continuous, sufficiently wide paths rather than simply adding obstacles between cars and pedestrians. The environmental benefits are also relevant. Safer and more comfortable walking routes can encourage short trips without private vehicles, reducing unnecessary traffic and emissions.Connecting protected footpaths to bus stops, Metro stations, cycle routes and neighbourhood destinations can help create a more integrated low-carbon mobility network.The immediate lesson for Bengaluru is that street safety cannot be separated from street design. Enforcement remains necessary, but well-maintained and physically protected pedestrian infrastructure can reduce exposure to traffic and make walking a more reliable mode of transport.

As the city continues to invest in mobility infrastructure, the condition and design of its footpaths should receive equal attention. Safer walking space is not an optional streetscape feature; it is foundational infrastructure for a city seeking to become more accessible, resilient and less dependent on private vehicles.
