Bengaluru traffic police have registered cases against 617 drivers and riders accused of drunk driving during a citywide enforcement operation conducted across the limits of all 53 traffic police stations, according to Prajavani, citing the traffic police.
The operation involved checks on 38,034 vehicles. Police said the action was aimed at preventing people from driving after consuming alcohol and improving road safety across Bengaluru.
Traffic police also conducted a separate enforcement drive against speeding. Cases were registered against 179 people found driving at excessive speed, and fines totalling ₹1.79 lakh were collected, the department said.
The figures cover enforcement action reported by the traffic police and do not indicate the number of convictions or final outcomes in the cases. The report also does not specify the dates of individual violations, the locations of the checks or the number of vehicles tested for alcohol consumption separately from the overall inspection figure.
The operation highlights the scale of traffic enforcement required across Bengaluru’s extensive road network. With checks conducted across all 53 traffic station jurisdictions, the action was not limited to a single corridor or neighbourhood. The police statement linked the enforcement to efforts to curb both drunk driving and speeding, two violations that can increase risks for motorists, pedestrians and other road users.
Traffic police said such operations would continue to prevent drunk driving and speeding and to strengthen road safety in the city.
