Bengaluru Air Quality Shows Uneven Pollution Burden

Bengaluru’s air quality remained in the moderate category on August 21, but citywide averages mask significant differences between neighbourhoods. The latest readings put the overall Air Quality Index at 71, while PM10 reached 160 and PM2.5 stood at 28. The variation between monitoring locations points to a wider urban challenge: pollution exposure is increasingly shaped by where people live, work and travel.

The latest data also shows a clear shift from the previous day. Bengaluru’s AQI was recorded at 85 on August 20, before easing to 71 a day later. While the improvement is encouraging, short-term fluctuations should not be mistaken for a sustained reduction in urban pollution. Weather conditions, traffic intensity, construction activity and local dispersion can all influence readings over relatively short periods. Silk Board emerged as the most polluted monitored location on August 21, with an AQI of 71, while Hebbal recorded the lowest reading at 35. That gap is important for understanding how pollution behaves in a large and highly mobile city. Traffic-heavy corridors can experience greater exposure to particulate pollution, particularly where road congestion, construction dust and limited space for walking or cycling overlap.The Bengaluru Air Quality picture also highlights the importance of looking beyond a single citywide number.

An AQI in the 51–100 range is classified as moderate, meaning air quality is generally acceptable but some sensitive people may experience discomfort. The current reading therefore does not indicate a citywide pollution emergency, but it does underline the need for greater attention to local exposure patterns. PM10 deserves particular scrutiny.At 160, its recorded concentration is substantially higher than the PM2.5 reading of 28 in the latest data. Coarser particulate matter can be associated with road dust, construction and other activities that disturb or resuspend material close to the ground. For a rapidly urbanising city, this makes dust management an infrastructure issue as much as an environmental one. For Bengaluru, the policy implication is straightforward: air-quality management cannot rely only on citywide averages. Monitoring near major traffic corridors, construction zones, employment districts and residential areas can provide a more useful picture of exposure and help target interventions.

The Bengaluru Air Quality trend should therefore be read alongside transport planning, road maintenance, construction practices and the availability of green and pedestrian infrastructure. Sustained improvement will depend not simply on cleaner air on individual days, but on reducing the sources that repeatedly push pollution upwards across the city.
