Bengaluru Adds Evening Waste Collection in Five South Wards

Bengaluru’s South City civic administration has introduced evening waste collection in five wards of the Bommanahalli Assembly constituency to improve household access to the service and control roadside garbage blackspots, South City Municipal Corporation Commissioner K.N. Ramesh said.

Under the new arrangement, vehicles collecting wet and dry waste will operate from 5pm to midnight. The administration said the evening schedule is intended to help residents who leave for work in the morning, school and college students, and homemakers who may not be able to hand over waste during the existing morning collection period.

The system has been introduced in four wards within the Bommanahalli Assembly constituency and Hongasandra ward, covering five wards in total. The decision expands collection beyond the morning schedule and is aimed at making the waste disposal system more responsive to the timings of households in the area.

According to the commissioner, 160 vehicles used for morning waste collection are operating across the five wards. In the evening, between 20 and 25 auto-rickshaws have been deployed for collection. The vehicles are being used to collect both wet and dry waste.

Hongasandra ward has 31 auto-rickshaws operating in the morning. The evening service there has six vehicles, including three assigned to wet waste and three assigned to dry waste, the commissioner said. The separate deployment for the two categories follows the city’s existing practice of collecting wet and dry waste through designated vehicles.

The move also responds to a practical gap in waste collection: residents whose daily schedules do not align with morning door-to-door services may otherwise retain waste at home or place it outside designated collection points. The municipal administration said the evening operation would help reduce roadside accumulation and address blackspots, although the report does not provide a timeline for assessing the programme’s performance or details on the quantity of waste collected during the new shift.

During a review of local civic issues, the commissioner also directed officials to prepare and submit a proposal to convert unused space beneath the flyover in front of the JSS Public School near Agara Lake in HSR Layout into a parking area. The area is facing increased traffic congestion and parking problems, according to the municipal administration.

The proposed parking facility would use currently unused space beneath the flyover. The report does not specify the proposed capacity, funding arrangement, operating agency or implementation schedule. Officials have been asked to prepare the proposal for submission, while evening waste collection is already operating through the 20 to 25 deployed vehicles across the five wards.
