Bellasis Bridge Closure for 18 Months

Mumbai: The historic Bellasis bridge near Mumbai Central, a relic from the British era, will be closed to vehicular traffic starting Monday, June 24, for a duration of 18 months. This closure is necessitated by plans for the bridge’s demolition and subsequent reconstruction.

The traffic police have issued an official notification announcing the suspension of vehicular movement on this critical link, which serves as a conduit between Tardeo and Nagpada via Mumbai Central. This development is expected to significantly impact the daily commute for residents and businesses in the area. Western Railway (WR) has awarded a Rs 24 crore contract for the meticulous demolition and reconstruction of the railway section of the bridge. This project aims to modernise the ageing infrastructure, ensuring enhanced safety and reliability for future use. The reconstruction is part of a broader initiative to upgrade and maintain the city’s vital transport links.

Motorists and commuters are advised to seek alternative routes and plan their journeys accordingly to avoid potential disruptions. The traffic police will be implementing diversions and providing updates to assist in managing the flow of traffic during the construction period. This significant infrastructure project underscores the continuous efforts to modernise Mumbai’s transport network, promising long-term benefits despite the short-term inconveniences. The reconstruction of the Bellasis bridge is a pivotal step in reinforcing the city’s commitment to maintaining and improving its critical transport infrastructure.
