The Karnataka government is preparing to hold the state legislature’s winter session at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi from December 7 for 10 days, according to a report by Prajavani. The proposed schedule has not yet been presented as a final notification, but administrative preparations have been set in motion.
The matter was discussed at a state Cabinet meeting held on October 15, the report said. Following that discussion, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh wrote to the secretaries of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council on Tuesday, directing them to begin the preparations required for the session.
The letter identified December 7 as the possible starting date. It instructed the legislature secretariats to make the necessary preliminary arrangements for conducting the session at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha. The proposed duration is 10 days.
The communication is significant because a legislature session in Belagavi requires coordination across multiple state departments and administrative functions. The session venue is located outside Bengaluru, the state capital, and preparations must therefore be organised around the operation of the legislature at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha. The Chief Secretary’s direction indicates that the planning process has moved beyond an informal discussion and into an administrative preparation stage.
However, the report does not state that the December 7 date has received final approval through a formal government notification. The wording cited in the report describes it as a possible date and asks the legislature secretariats to prepare accordingly. The final schedule, duration and detailed programme would therefore depend on subsequent official decisions.
The proposed session also places Belagavi back at the centre of Karnataka’s legislative calendar for the winter sitting. Holding sessions at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha gives the northern Karnataka city a recurring institutional role, while requiring the state administration to temporarily organise legislative business and related official activity from the city.
For residents and local authorities, the immediate public significance lies in the preparation phase. The session will require the venue and supporting administrative arrangements to be ready by the proposed opening date. The report, however, does not provide details about security arrangements, traffic management, accommodation, departmental deployment or the legislative agenda.
The Chief Secretary’s letter was addressed to the secretaries of both Houses of the state legislature. Further clarity is expected through the formal confirmation of the session dates and the release of associated administrative instructions.
