Behala Bus Stands, Park Set for Overhaul as Parking Crackdown Ordered

Behala’s dilapidated bus stands and poorly maintained public spaces are set for repairs after West Bengal urban development and municipal affairs minister Agnimitra Paul inspected wards 124 and 126 on Monday and directed officials to begin renovation and regular upkeep work.

The inspection covered bus stands in the Behala area, Gitanjali Kanan Park in Sakher Bazaar and the stretch beside Canal East and West Road. Paul said the bus stands were in an unclean and deteriorated condition, with inadequate facilities for passengers waiting for buses.

In a social media post, the minister said the condition of several bus stands had revealed a lack of basic services and cleanliness. She directed the officials accompanying her to clean the facilities immediately and establish a routine maintenance system.

Paul specifically instructed authorities to keep seating areas clean and usable and to maintain a healthy environment for passengers. The directions focus on the everyday service conditions experienced by public transport users, rather than only on the physical repair of the structures.

At Gitanjali Kanan Park, the minister called for measures to make the facility cleaner, more attractive and more suitable for public use. The proposed work includes regular cleaning inside and around the park, along with renovation and maintenance of walking tracks, seating areas and entrance points.

The inspection also identified a road-use problem near Canal East and West Road. Paul observed that motorcycles and cars were parked haphazardly at different locations along the road, and directed authorities to take steps to control illegal parking.

Officials were also asked to identify and establish designated legal parking facilities in the area. The direction links enforcement with the need to provide organised parking space, although the report does not specify the locations, capacity, funding or timeline for any such facilities.

The three issues—bus-stand maintenance, park upkeep and roadside parking—fall within different parts of local urban management but affect the same public realm. Bus passengers require clean and usable waiting areas, parks depend on routine maintenance after renovation, and roads need parking controls that do not leave residents without lawful alternatives.

The reported instructions do not yet establish a detailed implementation schedule or identify the agencies responsible for each activity. The next steps are expected to involve cleaning the bus stands, preparing renovation and maintenance work at the park, and determining designated parking arrangements near Canal East and West Road.
