BBMP Launches ‘Lite TenderSURE’ for Metro Footpaths Redevelopment

Bangalore’s civic body, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has announced a major initiative to enhance pedestrian infrastructure linking to Namma Metro’s Purple Line stations. Following successful projects along the Green Line earlier this year, BBMP’s latest endeavour under the ‘Lite TenderSURE’ model focuses on upgrading footpaths along key routes leading to Metro stations.

The proposed redevelopment spans seven major roads crucial for connectivity: Railway Parallel Road, 5th Main Road, 8th Main Road, 1st Main Road, and 1st Cross Road in Vijayanagar and Kengeri areas, RR Nagar Main Road in RR Nagar, and Dr Rajkumar Road near GT World Mall. BBMP officials have allocated over Rs 24 crore towards this pedestrian-friendly initiative, which aims to improve safety and accessibility for Metro commuters.

The decision to revamp these footpaths stems from the inadequate condition of existing walkways post-Namma Metro project completion, highlighting the municipality’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility infrastructure. The Road Infrastructure Division of BBMP has set an ambitious target to complete the project within 11 months from the commencement of work, projecting a completion date by June 2025.

In parallel, BBMP’s East Zone is set to initiate similar upgrades in their respective areas, reflecting a city-wide strategy to address pedestrian needs around Metro stations comprehensively.

Earlier this year, BBMP embarked on similar efforts along the Green Line, investing Rs 30 crore to refurbish footpaths along critical routes servicing stations from Sampige Road to Nagasandra. Projects in the West and South divisions, encompassing roads like Subedar Chatram Road, Mahalakshmi Layout Main Road, 100ft Road in Talaghattapura, and Vasanthapura Main Road, are progressing towards completion by February 2025 with an allocated budget of Rs 30 crore and Rs 28 crore respectively.
These initiatives underscore BBMP’s proactive stance in urban development, prioritizing pedestrian safety and infrastructure enhancement in alignment with Bangalore’s rapid metro expansion. By modernizing footpaths and ensuring seamless connectivity to Metro stations, the civic body aims to foster sustainable urban mobility while improving overall quality of life for residents.

The comprehensive approach towards infrastructure upgrades not only addresses immediate pedestrian concerns but also sets a precedent for future urban planning initiatives in Bangalore, positioning the city as a leader in transit-oriented development and public infrastructure management.
