Basavanagudi civic issues including irregular garbage collection, noise from a nearby business, haphazard parking and footpath encroachments have prompted Bengaluru MLA L A Ravi Subramanya to direct officials and contractors to take action after repeated complaints from residents.
During a visit to the locality, residents raised concerns about the failure of workers and contractors to collect garbage regularly and alleged that civic authorities had not addressed recurring problems such as potholes and dumping on footpaths. The MLA reprimanded marshals for not penalising people allegedly dumping waste on the footpath.
Residents near Puttanna Road Junction also complained about a commercial establishment that they said was creating a round-the-clock nuisance in an area with senior citizens. One resident said noise from workers hired by a nearby business had affected sleep, while vehicles parked on the road were restricting movement. Residents asked the authorities to intervene against the noise and parking problems.
Subramanya directed the business owner to stop operating, stating that the establishment was located in a residential area and violated the norms, according to the report. He said the health department would take suitable measures to stop the nuisance and directed engineers to clear encroachments on the footpath.
The MLA also instructed an engineer not to allow the contractor to visit the area or arrange for the contractor’s bill to be passed without the work being completed. “I am fed up with visiting this area and receiving similar complaints,” he said, according to Bangalore Mirror.
Residents said the problems reflected wider failures in the local civic system. Lakshmikant Bhat of Market Road alleged that workers, contractors and engineers had failed to discharge their duties. The Heritage Basavanagudi Residents’ Welfare Association also raised concerns about residents converting footpaths outside their homes into ramps and occupying conservancy lanes, which are public property.
Association secretary Guru Prasad said he had complained to the MLA about the alleged encroachments for three years but that no concrete action had been taken. The latest directions place responsibility on the health department, engineers, marshals and contractors, with action on the business, footpath encroachments and waste dumping now expected from the concerned authorities.
