Barapulla Phase 3 has opened in Delhi along with the Mukarba Chowk underpass, while foundation work has begun on the Modi Mill–Savitri Cinema flyover and the Loni Road underpass, in a four-project push aimed at easing congestion and shortening travel times across the capital. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the first two projects, while Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh were present at the event, according to Navbharat Times.
The Barapulla elevated road extension connects Sarai Kale Khan with Mayur Vihar Phase 1 and is expected to create a signal-free route between the two areas. The project includes a 4.9-km main elevated road, a 1.105-km cable bridge over the Yamuna, a 1.40-km loop on the Sarai Kale Khan side, a 2.65-km loop on the Mayur Vihar side and an 850-metre flyover on the Mayur Vihar side.
The project cost is reported at Rs 1,635.03 crore. Its original budget was Rs 964 crore and increased to Rs 1,250 crore during prolonged delays, while the project took 11 years to complete. The Barapulla corridor is being developed in phases: Phase 1 between Sarai Kale Khan and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was completed in 2010, Phase 2 between the stadium and INA in 2018, and Phase 3 is the connection to Mayur Vihar.
Traffic movements have been planned through multiple loops. A separate loop will serve vehicles travelling towards Noida, while another will connect Mayur Vihar Phase 1 and eastern Delhi. Traffic heading towards the DND Flyway and Ashram will separate after the two flows merge. Additional connections will serve AIIMS, IIT, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Sarai Kale Khan bus terminal and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station.
Officials said the journey from the petrol pump near Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar and the Delhi–Noida border could take about five minutes through the new connection. The report also said travel between AIIMS and Mayur Vihar currently takes about 15 to 17 minutes. A 2.5-km cycle track and a 1.5-metre-wide footpath have been included in the project details reported by the publication.
The 50-metre Mukarba Chowk underpass, built at a cost of Rs 43.29 crore, is expected to benefit about 15,900 vehicles. It will allow traffic from Badli and Rohini towards Azadpur and Jahangirpuri to avoid entering the Mukarba Chowk interchange.
The Modi Mill–Savitri Cinema flyover will be 1.15 km long and is estimated to cost Rs 208.99 crore. It is expected to benefit about 16,400 vehicles each day by improving the route from Modi Mill via the Outer Ring Road towards Chirag Delhi, with reported connectivity benefits for areas including IGI Airport, Nehru Place, Greater Kailash and nearby neighbourhoods.
The Loni Road underpass will be 540 metres long and is estimated to cost Rs 54.59 crore. The project is scheduled for completion by 2 January 2028 and is intended to improve movement between Loni Road and Shahdara by allowing vehicles to bypass the roundabout.
The Delhi government said the projects would improve daily travel, while the PWD described them as part of efforts to reduce congestion. The report also identified possible pressure points, including the Noida Link Road and the INA area, as traffic patterns change after Barapulla Phase 3 opens. The new Barapulla connection is scheduled to become available for general traffic from Wednesday, according to the report.
