The Pune Municipal Corporation has resolved a 15-year land acquisition deadlock for the Baner-Pashan link road, with the final award for the required land now declared and the administration beginning the process of taking possession, according to a report by Loksatta – Pune. The development is expected to help complete a critical missing section of the road and ease congestion in the Baner-Pashan area.
The 1.2-kilometre road is proposed as a 36-metre-wide development plan road through Survey Numbers 134 to 138 and 140 in Pashan. Most of the road work has been completed, but construction on an important section remained stalled because the Pune Municipal Corporation could not obtain certain privately owned plots.
The land acquisition issue had continued for about 15 years despite efforts by the civic body’s road department to secure the required properties. The absence of the land prevented the completion of the remaining portion and limited the road’s ability to function as a continuous link between Baner and Pashan.
According to the report, the final award, or निवाडा, for the land has now been declared. The municipal administration has started the process of taking possession of the property. The report does not specify the compensation amount, the number of affected landowners or the date by which the remaining construction will be completed.
The incomplete road has contributed to congestion in the surrounding area, with motorists and residents facing delays. Traffic queues have reportedly persisted for extended periods, particularly because the unfinished link has restricted movement through the planned route and placed additional pressure on nearby roads.
Residents have raised concerns in recent months and demanded that the civic body complete the stalled work. The land acquisition decision is therefore an administrative milestone, but the road will provide its full transport benefit only after possession is completed and the remaining construction, connecting works and related road infrastructure are finished.
The Baner-Pashan link road forms part of Pune’s development plan and was designed to improve connectivity between two rapidly urbanising parts of the city. Its prolonged delay also highlights the implementation challenge involved in executing planned urban roads when privately owned land remains unresolved for years.
The immediate next step is the Pune Municipal Corporation’s possession process. Further progress will depend on the handover of the land and completion of the remaining section of the 1.2-kilometre road.
