Bairabi-Sairang Rail Services Resume After Rain Damage

Train services on Mizoram’s Bairabi-Sairang railway section resumed on Thursday evening after Northeast Frontier Railway restored tracks damaged by heavy rain, water overflow and muck between Kawnpui and Mualkhang.

Rail movement on the section had been suspended on Wednesday afternoon as a precaution after intense rainfall caused water and debris to flow onto the tracks. The disruption affected several services connecting Sairang with Assam and other parts of the country.

According to railway sources, NFR teams worked through the night to remove debris, repair the affected stretch and complete safety inspections before trains were allowed to operate again. Services from Sairang began returning to normal from Thursday evening after the track was cleared and certified for operations.

The interruption highlighted the operational vulnerability of the railway route during periods of intense rainfall. The affected stretch lies on the Bairabi-Sairang line, which provides rail access to the Aizawl region and connects Mizoram with Assam and the wider Indian railway network.

The disruption did not affect the daily Bairabi-Silchar train service, which continued to operate as scheduled, railway sources said. Other services linked to Sairang were affected while restoration work was under way.

The railway line is an important transport link for passengers travelling between Mizoram and Assam, as well as for onward journeys to other parts of the country. The resumption of services restores the scheduled rail connection after the temporary suspension caused by the rain-related track damage.

NFR’s immediate response involved debris clearance, repairs and safety checks before operations restarted. Railway services from Sairang are expected to return to normal following the reopening of the restored section.
