India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper service is set to connect Guwahati in Assam with Howrah in Kolkata, introducing a new overnight mobility option between two major eastern regions. The service marks a shift towards faster long-distance rail travel while strengthening economic links, tourism flows and access to opportunities across the Northeast and eastern India.
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train reflects the changing role of rail infrastructure in supporting regional development. Unlike conventional daytime semi-high-speed services, sleeper trains are designed for longer journeys where passengers can travel overnight while reducing dependence on shorter-distance air travel.The new service will operate with a 16-coach configuration, including air-conditioned sleeper classes and modern passenger facilities. With a capacity of more than 800 passengers, the train is expected to improve mobility between Assam and West Bengal, regions that have significant commercial, educational and cultural connections.Urban planners and transport experts note that improved rail connectivity can influence how cities and smaller towns grow. The service has been designed for long-distance journeys of around 1,000 to 1,500 kilometres, creating a new category of overnight premium rail travel in the country.
