The newly constructed 33.864-km broad gauge railway section between Hortoki and Sairang has successfully passed its final safety inspection. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) for the Northeast Frontier Circle submitted the inspection report to the Ministry of Railways on June 12, 2025 . This marks the culmination of the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway project, which aims to connect Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, to the national railway network.
The project has been under construction for several years, overcoming numerous challenges posed by the region’s hilly terrain and seismic activity. The CRS conducted a comprehensive five-day inspection from June 6 to 10, 2025, including speed trials at 35, 50, 80, and 110 km/h to assess track stability and safety. The line has now been authorized for operation at speeds up to 90 km/h for both freight and passenger services .
The Bairabi–Sairang railway line is an engineering feat, featuring 48 tunnels and 55 major bridges, with a total tunnel length exceeding 12.8 kilometers. Notably, Bridge No. 196 near Sairang station boasts a pier height of 104 meters, surpassing the height of Delhi’s Qutub Minar by 42 meters. With the completion of the Hortoki–Sairang section, the entire rail line is now ready for operation. This development is expected to enhance connectivity, reduce transportation costs, and stimulate economic growth in Mizoram. The project is also anticipated to boost tourism and facilitate the movement of goods and people between Mizoram and the rest of India.
The successful completion of the Bairabi–Sairang railway project underscores the commitment of Indian Railways to improving infrastructure in the northeastern region. It also reflects the government’s focus on fostering regional development and integration through enhanced connectivity. As Aizawl prepares to join the national railway network, this milestone signifies a new era of accessibility and economic opportunity for the people of Mizoram.
