Airbnb will contribute a portion of revenue from every eligible stay to its independent nonprofit arm Airbnb.org under a new five-year funding plan expected to channel $500 million towards crisis housing.
The arrangement takes effect immediately and is intended to help Airbnb.org provide 1 million nights of free accommodation annually to people facing emergencies, the company said in an announcement reported by The Hindu BusinessLine.
Under the plan, Airbnb will donate $0.10 for every eligible stay booked on its platform. The company said the contribution will not change the amount guests pay or the payouts received by hosts. Neither guests nor hosts will need to opt in.
Bookings cancelled before check-in, along with reservations for experiences and services, will not be included in the funding mechanism. The model therefore links the contribution to completed eligible accommodation stays rather than to every transaction carried out through the wider platform.
Airbnb.org was established in 2020 after developing from a grassroots initiative that began in 2012, when a host provided accommodation to people displaced by Hurricane Sandy. The nonprofit has since provided more than 1.6 million nights of free housing to over 250,000 people worldwide, according to Airbnb.
The organisation’s work is focused on short-term accommodation for people affected by crises. Airbnb said it responded to more than 200 disasters this year, compared with eight in 2023. The company did not provide a country-wise breakdown of those responses in the information supplied.
The new funding is also expected to support three additional areas. Airbnb.org plans to assist families travelling for medical care in more than 20 countries by the end of 2026. It will also provide temporary stays to survivors of domestic violence and exploitation, and extend support to veterans in the United States facing serious illness or intensive treatment.
The arrangement places crisis accommodation within the operating economics of a large digital housing marketplace. Rather than relying only on separate public donations, the new model creates a small contribution attached to eligible stays across the platform. Airbnb said its own funding covers Airbnb.org’s operating costs, allowing all public donations to go directly towards housing.
The announcement does not specify how the $500 million will be distributed across disaster response, medical travel, domestic violence support and veterans’ assistance. It also does not identify the number of stays expected to generate the funding or set out country-level targets.
Airbnb said the five-year commitment will support Airbnb.org’s goal of providing 1 million free housing nights each year. The funding mechanism is now in effect, while the planned expansion into medical travel support across more than 20 countries is scheduled to be in place by the end of 2026.
