Ahmedabad’s seasonal shingada market is seeing a sharp winter surge, with more than 30 trucks arriving every night at the historic Bhoiwada wholesale market near Delhi Chakla, according to a ground report by Gujarat Samachar. The market supplies raw water chestnuts and seasonal chani bor to retailers and street vendors across the city.
The shingadas are brought from different parts of Kheda district and unloaded directly at Bhoiwada. Wholesale prices are currently around ₹160 per kilogram. Vendors then boil the water chestnuts and sell them in neighbourhood markets and on roadside carts for up to ₹320 per kilogram.
The flow of produce makes Bhoiwada an important link between agricultural areas around Ahmedabad and the city’s informal retail network. Retailers and street vendors collect supplies from the market before distributing them across different parts of Ahmedabad, allowing a short-season crop to reach consumers within the city.
Bhoiwada also becomes a hub for chani bor, the sour-sweet seasonal fruit brought in loaded rickshaws from villages and rural areas around Ahmedabad. Unlike the late-night and early-morning movement of shingadas, the chani bor wholesale trade is concentrated in a short morning window. The market generally begins at 8 am and remains active for only two to three hours.
Chani bor is currently sold at approximately ₹60 per kilogram in wholesale transactions. The brief trading period reflects the seasonal and perishable nature of the produce, as well as the role of small transporters and vendors who bring it from surrounding rural areas into the city.
Gujarat Samachar’s report describes both fruits as seasonal foods associated with winter consumption. It also cites traditional Ayurvedic and health-related claims about their nutritional value, including minerals and fibre in shingada and vitamin C in chani bor. These claims are attributed to the report and have not been independently assessed in the supplied material.
The market’s winter activity is expected to continue through the seasonal trading period, with nightly shingada arrivals and the limited morning wholesale window for chani bor remaining the key points of distribution.
