Ahmedabad Plastic Ban Crackdown Seals 20 Businesses, Fines Reach Rs 2.67 Lakh

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s West Zone solid waste management department has checked 239 commercial units over the past three days, issued notices to 153 of them and sealed 20 businesses for violating rules related to public cleanliness, nuisance and banned plastic use. The enforcement drive has resulted in administrative charges totalling Rs 2,67,000.

The action was conducted under the supervision of the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the West Zone. Separate squads carried out inspections during both daytime and night-time across different areas and wards in the zone, according to the report published by Sandesh.

The inspections targeted commercial establishments accused of spreading waste or nuisance on public roads, as well as pan stalls, tea kiosks and units involved in the use, sale, storage or production of prohibited plastic. Businesses that did not maintain dustbins were also included in the checks. The action was taken under the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations Act and public health bylaws.

The civic department said it inspected 239 units during the campaign. Of these, 153 units were served notices for violations related to solid waste and prohibited plastic rules. The notices represent the largest part of the reported enforcement action, while 20 commercial establishments were sealed for spreading dirt or nuisance on public roads.

The department seized 23.100 kilograms of prohibited plastic during the drive and collected Rs 1,24,000 as an administrative charge linked to the seizure and violation. A further Rs 1,43,000 was collected from the 20 businesses sealed for cleanliness and nuisance-related violations. Together, the two components brought the total administrative charge to Rs 2,67,000.

The operation highlights the municipal challenge of enforcing waste rules beyond household collection systems. Public-road cleanliness is also affected by commercial units that do not provide dustbins, dispose of waste improperly or use materials restricted under municipal and public-health regulations. The West Zone action combines inspections, notices, sealing and financial penalties rather than relying only on awareness activity.

Alongside enforcement, the solid waste management department is conducting information, education and communication activities in residential areas and commercial establishments across the West Zone. Residents and businesses are being urged not to throw waste in public places, to segregate waste and to hand it over only to official AMC vehicles. The department is also distributing pamphlets to explain these requirements.

The municipal corporation has said that similar enforcement campaigns will continue in the coming days against establishments whose actions affect public cleanliness and residents’ health. The next phase will therefore combine continued checking with awareness activities and instructions on waste segregation and disposal through authorised AMC collection vehicles.
