Ahmedabad’s 4-km SG Highway Flyover Set for 9 November Opening

Ahmedabad’s 4-km six-lane flyover between Iskcon Junction and Sarkhej Chowkdi on SG Highway is scheduled to be inaugurated on 9 November by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, according to a report by Divya Bhaskar quoting Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot. The bridge is expected to ease traffic for around two lakh vehicle users each day, although it will become operational only after the inauguration.

The flyover has been constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to address persistent congestion on one of Ahmedabad’s busiest transport corridors. Construction work has continued for more than two years, covering the stretch between Iskcon Junction and Sarkhej Chowkdi through the SG Highway corridor.

The project includes three ramps on each side of the elevated structure. These ramps are intended to provide access and exit points for vehicles using the flyover, while connecting traffic movements around the junctions along the corridor. The report said the bridge would help motorists travelling between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, as well as vehicles coming from Saurashtra towards Ahmedabad and continuing through Ujala Circle to Gandhinagar.

The inauguration is part of a wider programme of civic and development works planned during Shah’s Ahmedabad visit. According to Mayor Barot, projects worth more than Rs 671 crore will be inaugurated, while foundation stones will be laid for works estimated at Rs 358 crore. The combined value of the announced inaugurations and foundation ceremonies is therefore more than Rs 1,000 crore.

The programme is also expected to include the inauguration of new smart schools in Naranpura, Ghatlodia and Bopal. In the Sabarmati Assembly constituency, new water tanks in Ranip and Chandlodia are scheduled to be opened. Foundation ceremonies are planned for the redevelopment of Parikshitlal Nagar slum and Hanumanpura Chawl in the Wadaj area.

The SG Highway flyover is being opened against the backdrop of continuing pressure on Ahmedabad’s arterial roads, where traffic volumes converge between the city, Gandhinagar and major suburban growth areas. The six-lane elevated link is intended to separate through traffic from movements at the junctions, while its ramps are designed to retain connections to surrounding roads.

Divya Bhaskar reported that a public meeting involving the Union minister is also being planned. The venue was expected to be finalised by the evening of 4 November. The inauguration and the related civic events are scheduled for 9 November.
