Ahmedabad continues to grapple with extreme summer conditions, with daytime temperatures remaining above 40°C as the southwest monsoon’s advance across Gujarat slows. Weather officials expect a gradual shift in conditions later this week, with rainfall likely to bring relief after an extended spell of intense heat that has placed pressure on public health, urban infrastructure and energy demand.
The city recorded a maximum temperature of 40.6°C on Sunday, significantly above the seasonal average, while warm overnight conditions provided little respite for residents. Forecasts indicate temperatures may remain elevated in the short term before cloud cover and monsoon activity increase towards the latter part of the week. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the northern limit of the southwest monsoon is currently progressing through parts of Gujarat, with rainfall activity expected to expand into additional districts over the coming days. Ahmedabad is among the areas likely to witness light to moderate showers and thunderstorms as weather systems strengthen across the state. The prolonged Ahmedabad heatwave has highlighted the growing challenge of managing climate extremes in rapidly urbanising cities. Higher temperatures increase electricity demand for cooling, elevate heat-related health risks and place additional stress on water resources, particularly in densely built neighbourhoods where the urban heat island effect intensifies daytime conditions.
Urban climate specialists emphasise that heat resilience requires more than seasonal forecasts. Expanding tree cover, protecting open spaces, improving building design, increasing reflective roofing and strengthening early warning systems can help reduce the impact of prolonged heat episodes on vulnerable communities. Integrating these measures into future urban planning is becoming increasingly important as climate variability affects Indian cities with greater frequency. The anticipated arrival of monsoon showers is expected to lower temperatures and improve outdoor conditions. However, civic agencies will also need to prepare for the transition from extreme heat to intense rainfall by ensuring stormwater drainage systems remain functional, minimising the risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas.
As Ahmedabad experiences increasingly variable weather patterns, experts suggest that combining climate-responsive infrastructure with improved weather forecasting and public preparedness will be essential to building a more resilient and liveable city in the years ahead.
