Ahmedabad Urban Growth Raises Climate Concerns

A new scientific study has projected that unchecked urban expansion could transform much of the Ahmedabad Metropolitan Region into built-up land by 2045, raising concerns over declining green spaces, shrinking water bodies and increasing climate vulnerability. Researchers suggest the findings highlight the need for stronger land-use planning as the city balances economic growth with long-term environmental resilience.

Using satellite imagery, cloud-based geospatial analysis and machine learning models, the study assessed land-use changes across the Ahmedabad Metropolitan Region, which includes areas governed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority and neighbouring urban jurisdictions. The projections indicate that built-up areas could account for more than three-quarters of the metropolitan region if current development trends continue. The research estimates that natural vegetation could decline sharply over the next two decades, reducing the city’s capacity to moderate temperatures, improve air quality and support biodiversity. Such changes could intensify the urban heat island effect, where dense concentrations of concrete and asphalt absorb and retain heat, resulting in higher temperatures across urban neighbourhoods.

According to the study, the Ahmedabad Metropolitan Region may also experience a reduction in water bodies, agricultural land and open buffer spaces that currently help absorb rainfall and recharge groundwater. Urban planners warn that replacing permeable landscapes with impervious surfaces could increase surface runoff, raising the likelihood of flooding and waterlogging during intense monsoon events. The projections come as Ahmedabad continues to witness rapid infrastructure expansion driven by transport projects, industrial investment and urban redevelopment. While these initiatives contribute to economic growth and improved connectivity, environmental experts argue that future planning must integrate ecological safeguards to ensure long-term sustainability.

Climate specialists note that preserving urban forests, wetlands and green corridors can strengthen resilience against rising temperatures while improving public health and liveability. Nature-based solutions such as expanded tree cover, green roofs, permeable pavements and restored lakes are increasingly recognised as effective tools for mitigating climate risks in rapidly urbanising cities. The study also recommends improving land-use monitoring through geospatial technologies and strengthening regulations that protect environmentally sensitive areas from unplanned development. Transparent planning frameworks and regular environmental assessments could help city authorities respond more effectively to changing urban growth patterns. While the projections represent future scenarios rather than predetermined outcomes, researchers emphasise that policy decisions taken over the coming years will shape Ahmedabad’s environmental trajectory. As one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions, the city faces the challenge of accommodating development while safeguarding the natural systems that support climate resilience, water security and the quality of urban life.
