Traffic movement between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar is expected to become more efficient following the opening of Gujarat’s first urban cable stayed flyover at Bhat Circle. The project, coupled with a planned expansion of the nearby Narmada Main Canal bridge, marks another step in strengthening mobility across one of the state’s busiest transport corridors while preparing for future traffic growth.
The newly commissioned 1.48-kilometre flyover has been developed at Bhat Circle, where the Gandhinagar–Airport Road intersects with the Sardar Patel Ring Road. The redesigned junction separates traffic flows by allowing vehicles travelling between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar to use the elevated corridor, while Ring Road traffic continues beneath the structure, reducing congestion at one of the region’s key intersections. Alongside the inauguration, authorities have launched work to widen the existing bridge across the Narmada Main Canal between Koba Circle and Bhat Circle. The project will increase road capacity by expanding the crossing from six lanes to twelve through the addition of two new three-lane bridges, creating greater resilience for rising commuter and commercial traffic. The Ahmedabad cable stayed flyover is expected to support a corridor that carries nearly two lakh vehicles every day, serving commuters, airport users, freight operators and businesses across the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar metropolitan region. Transport planners believe improved junction design will reduce travel delays, improve traffic flow and enhance overall network efficiency.
Urban infrastructure experts note that grade-separated intersections are an effective way to improve road performance at heavily congested locations. However, they emphasise that expanding road capacity should be complemented by investments in public transport, pedestrian connectivity and cycling infrastructure to ensure long-term, sustainable urban mobility. The corridor continues to witness rapid urbanisation, supported by residential development, commercial activity, educational institutions and industrial growth. As travel demand rises, integrated infrastructure planning will be essential to balance accessibility, economic productivity and environmental considerations.
The project also includes new six-lane service roads designed to facilitate smoother movement towards the Ring Road as well as the Vadodara and Surat corridors. These complementary improvements are expected to enhance local connectivity while reducing conflicts between through traffic and vehicles accessing surrounding areas. As Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar continue to function as an increasingly integrated metropolitan region, strategic transport investments will remain central to supporting economic growth and improving commuter experience. The Ahmedabad cable stayed flyover demonstrates how targeted infrastructure upgrades can address current traffic pressures while creating capacity for future urban expansion.
