Ahmedabad is expanding its urban water conservation infrastructure by installing rooftop rainwater harvesting systems across nearly 1,750 public buildings, a move aimed at strengthening groundwater reserves and improving long-term water security. The initiative comes as cities across India seek climate-resilient solutions to address growing water stress, rapid urbanisation and increasing pressure on natural resources.
The programme covers a wide network of civic assets, including municipal headquarters, zonal and ward offices, hospitals, schools, libraries, urban health centres and water pumping stations. Municipal officials indicate that approximately half of the planned installations have already been completed, with nearly 1,000 systems expected to become operational before the onset of the monsoon season. Under the initiative, rainwater collected from rooftops will be filtered and channelled into recharge structures designed to replenish underground aquifers. Urban water specialists view such decentralised systems as an effective method for reducing dependence on external water sources while improving the city’s ability to manage seasonal rainfall. The expansion reflects a broader shift in urban infrastructure planning, where water conservation is increasingly being integrated into public asset management. Rather than allowing rainwater to flow into drainage systems, cities are exploring ways to capture and reuse precipitation to improve long-term resource sustainability.
Experts note that groundwater recharge projects can deliver multiple benefits beyond water conservation. Improved aquifer levels can help support future water availability, reduce pressure on municipal supply systems and contribute to mitigating urban flooding by reducing stormwater runoff during periods of intense rainfall.
