Ahmedabad: Construction of the southern elevated access road under the Ahmedabad Railway Station redevelopment programme has entered another phase, with railway authorities reviewing progress on a key link designed to improve passenger movement and strengthen connectivity with the city’s surrounding road network. The project forms part of the wider transformation of Ahmedabad into a modern multimodal transport hub.
During a site inspection, railway officials assessed progress on the elevated road and its planned connection with the Sarangpur Road Over Bridge (ROB), a critical component intended to improve access to the redeveloped station. Project teams were instructed to maintain construction quality, adhere to safety standards and complete works within the scheduled timelines. According to officials, work is progressing on multiple portal piers that will support the elevated roadway. Several structural components have already been completed, while foundation and piling activities continue on the remaining sections. Construction is also advancing in the proposed southern drop-off zone, where supporting piers are being developed to facilitate smoother passenger pick-up and drop-off operations once the station redevelopment is completed. The Ahmedabad Railway Station redevelopment is one of the city’s most significant transport infrastructure projects, aiming to integrate railway services with improved road access, pedestrian circulation and future multimodal connectivity. Urban mobility experts note that modern station redevelopment increasingly extends beyond upgrading platforms, focusing instead on seamless interchange between rail, metro, buses, private vehicles and non-motorised transport.
Improved southern access is expected to help distribute traffic more efficiently around the station precinct, reducing congestion at existing entry points while creating more organised circulation for passengers and public transport. Such infrastructure can also improve emergency access and enhance operational efficiency at one of western India’s busiest railway stations. The inspection also coincided with updates on an environmental initiative linked to the railway network. Under a large-scale plantation programme being implemented in partnership with the Gujarat Forest Department, railway authorities have begun afforestation on available railway land near Sanand. More than 200,000 saplings have already been planted during the first phase, with plans to expand plantation efforts across multiple railway locations under the state’s Van Kavach initiative.
Urban planners increasingly regard green infrastructure as an important complement to transport development. Tree plantation around railway corridors can improve local biodiversity, reduce urban heat, enhance carbon sequestration and contribute to more climate-resilient transport infrastructure while making public spaces more comfortable for commuters. As Ahmedabad continues to modernise its transport network, integrating mobility improvements with environmental initiatives reflects a broader shift towards sustainable infrastructure planning. The successful delivery of the Ahmedabad Railway Station redevelopment, together with expanded urban greening, is expected to improve passenger experience while supporting the city’s long-term goals of resilient, efficient and people-centred urban development.
