Ahmedabad’s solid waste department has sealed 20 commercial units, including the Honest restaurant at Commerce Six Roads, and issued notices to 153 others during enforcement against roadside littering and the use of banned plastic, according to a report by Nav Gujarat Samay – Ahmedabad.
The action followed directions from the civic commissioner to the solid waste departments in all seven municipal zones to conduct daily inspections in different parts of the city. The reported enforcement covers violations related to public cleanliness and prohibited plastic use by commercial establishments and street-level businesses.
The western zone team inspected 239 units across Navrangpura, Naranpura, Vasna, Wadaj, Ranip, Sabarmati and Paldi, the report said. Notices were issued to 153 units found linked to littering or banned plastic use, while fines totalling Rs 2.67 lakh were collected. Twenty units, including the Honest outlet at Commerce Six Roads, were sealed as part of the action.
The enforcement drive places commercial establishments under greater scrutiny for how they handle waste and use plastic in public-facing operations. Sealing is the strictest action reported in the drive, while notices and fines have been used against a larger number of establishments. The report did not provide details of the individual violations or the period for which the sealed units would remain closed.
Separate inspections were also carried out at pan masala stalls and shops across Ahmedabad’s seven zones. The solid waste departments checked 1,355 such establishments, seized 35 kilograms of plastic and collected Rs 1.15 lakh in fines, according to the report.
The figures also point to uneven enforcement across the municipal system. While the western and north-western zones were reported to be conducting daily checks and taking penal action in different wards, the report said some other zones were carrying out limited inspections and collecting relatively small fines. The civic commissioner has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction over this variation, it said.
The enforcement drive illustrates how Ahmedabad’s cleanliness system depends not only on waste collection but also on ward-level monitoring of commercial activity and plastic consumption. Daily inspections, notices, fines and sealing actions are being used together to address behaviour that can add waste to roads and public spaces.
The report did not state how many of the 20 sealed units had been allowed to reopen, whether the notices would lead to further closures, or what follow-up inspections were planned. The municipal solid waste departments are expected to continue inspections across different areas under the commissioner’s direction.
