Ahmedabad is introducing pedestrian-activated traffic signalling systems at selected road intersections, signalling a broader shift towards people-centred mobility planning in one of India’s fastest-growing urban regions. The deployment of the Pelican Signal System allows pedestrians to request a dedicated crossing phase through a push-button mechanism that temporarily halts vehicle movement. Widely used in several global cities, the technology is designed to provide safer crossing opportunities on busy roads where continuous traffic flow can create challenges for vulnerable road users. Urban mobility specialists note that pedestrian infrastructure has historically received less attention than vehicle-oriented road development in many Indian cities. However, growing traffic volumes, rising urban populations and increasing concerns around road safety are prompting municipal authorities to rethink how streets are designed and managed.
