A major road infrastructure project on the outskirts of Ahmedabad has entered a new phase after authorities completed a large-scale land clearance operation along a key state highway corridor, paving the way for capacity expansion on an important regional transport route.
The intervention was carried out on a section of State Highway 17, a corridor that links Ahmedabad with parts of western Gujarat and supports movement between industrial, commercial and agricultural centres. Officials overseeing the project indicated that land required for the road widening programme had been encroached upon by a mix of commercial and community structures, creating a long-standing bottleneck for planned upgrades. The clearance exercise forms part of a broader effort to improve regional connectivity and address increasing traffic volumes on highways serving fast-growing urban and peri-urban areas. Transport planners have repeatedly highlighted the need to modernise secondary highway networks as economic activity expands beyond metropolitan centres and freight movement intensifies across Gujarat. Authorities reported that several structures occupying public land were removed following administrative and legal procedures. Security arrangements were strengthened during the operation to ensure public order and minimise disruption to surrounding communities. The highway expansion is expected to enhance travel efficiency between Ahmedabad and destinations further west, including important manufacturing and logistics zones.
