Ahmedabad Riverfront Parking Reopens Tender After Year-Long Closure

Ahmedabad’s ₹60-crore multilevel parking facility opposite Flower Park on the Sabarmati Riverfront has remained closed for about a year, while the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) has begun a fresh effort to lease part of the building for annual rent of ₹36.42 lakh, according to a report by Gujarat Samachar – Ahmedabad.

The seven-storey facility was inaugurated in September 2023 and was designed to accommodate 700 cars and 1,000 two-wheelers. It includes automated parking sensors, CCTV cameras, electric vehicle charging points, QR-coded tickets, digital payment machines, boom barriers and a display system showing available spaces. The facility is also connected to a smart parking mobile application.

The report said that the earlier contractor had taken the parking facility on lease for ₹50 lakh but later sought cancellation of the agreement after its monthly income reportedly failed to reach even ₹1 lakh. Following the cancellation, the building became unused and parking services were stopped, leaving residents and visitors without access to the facility while SRFDCL received no rental income from it.

Under the latest leasing exercise, SRFDCL is seeking to lease floors one to five for ₹36.42 lakh a year. The revised arrangement does not use the facility’s full stated capacity. The tender documents reportedly show space for 856 two-wheelers and 372 cars on the first and second floors, while the building’s seventh floor has been reserved for a garden restaurant.

The sixth floor is being kept vacant for parking linked to the proposed restaurant, according to information attributed to SRFDCL sources in the report. The reduction in the number of parking spaces has also lowered the total rent being sought for the facility.

The parking building was planned as part of the Riverfront’s public-access infrastructure, where visitor demand and vehicle management are closely linked to the use of public spaces. Its closure means that the technology installed in the facility—including occupancy sensors, digital displays and electronic payment systems—is not currently delivering a parking service to the public.

The latest leasing effort also brings renewed attention to the way multilevel parking projects are planned and operated in Ahmedabad. The report referred to earlier disputes involving multilevel parking facilities on Sindhu Bhavan Road and in Prahladnagar, but did not provide details of their current operating status or financial performance.

The immediate administrative step is SRFDCL’s attempt to lease floors one to five under the revised capacity and rental structure. The report did not state the tender deadline, the expected date for reopening the facility or whether a new contractor has been selected.
