Ahmedabad: India’s freight logistics network has added momentum with the operation of a dedicated export container train linking an inland container depot in Haryana to Gujarat’s Mundra Port, reinforcing the growing role of rail-based cargo movement in improving supply chain efficiency and supporting lower-emission freight transport.
The latest movement involved a complete block train carrying 45 fully loaded 40-foot export containers from ICD Patli to Mundra Port through an integrated rail corridor. Industry observers say such dedicated services reflect the increasing preference for multimodal logistics solutions that combine rail and port infrastructure to move cargo more efficiently while reducing dependence on long-haul trucking. For India’s export sector, predictable freight movement has become increasingly important as manufacturers and exporters seek faster turnaround times and reliable access to international shipping routes. Dedicated rail corridors enable uninterrupted cargo movement, helping exporters meet vessel schedules while reducing delays that can increase logistics costs and affect global competitiveness. Transport economists note that expanding rail freight capacity is also aligned with the country’s broader infrastructure strategy of shifting a larger share of cargo from roads to rail. Rail transport generally consumes less fuel per tonne of freight, lowers greenhouse gas emissions and eases pressure on national highways, making it a key component of sustainable logistics planning.
