Delhi: Construction activity has entered a new phase on the Kalkaji Flyover second lane project along the Outer Ring Road in South Delhi, with road space now partially occupied for foundation work near the Okhla NSIC Metro Station. The development is expected to affect traffic movement over the coming weeks while forming part of a wider effort to strengthen one of the capital’s busiest transport corridors.

Temporary barricading has narrowed a section of the carriageway as excavation for bridge foundations progresses. The ongoing work has reduced available road width for vehicles travelling between Nehru Place and the Modi Mill corridor, resulting in slower traffic movement during peak commuting hours. Traffic managers are expected to monitor congestion levels as construction advances through successive stages. The Kalkaji Flyover second lane project represents an important upgrade to an infrastructure network that has struggled to keep pace with rising travel demand across South Delhi. The corridor serves office districts, residential neighbourhoods, commercial centres and metro connectivity, making uninterrupted movement essential for commuters, businesses and public transport users. Pre-construction investigations, including geotechnical assessments, were completed earlier to determine soil conditions and engineering requirements. However, the execution phase had been delayed by logistical challenges linked to securing adequate space for storing heavy construction materials in the densely developed urban environment. With site arrangements now in place, civil works have formally commenced.

Urban mobility specialists note that expanding existing flyovers is often more complex than constructing new roads because work must continue alongside live traffic. Construction management, lane planning and public communication therefore become critical in reducing disruption while ensuring worker and commuter safety. The wider infrastructure programme also includes improvements to another key flyover in the surrounding area, reflecting a broader strategy to enhance connectivity across South Delhi rather than addressing isolated bottlenecks. Officials expect the combined interventions to improve traffic distribution and reduce recurring congestion once operational, although motorists are likely to experience intermittent delays during construction. Transport planners argue that while additional road capacity can ease pressure at critical junctions, long-term mobility gains depend on integrating road upgrades with efficient public transport, pedestrian infrastructure and sustainable urban planning. Given the project’s proximity to a major metro station, careful traffic management will be necessary to maintain safe access for commuters using multimodal transport.

Over the coming months, authorities are expected to continue construction in phases while implementing traffic diversions where required. Residents and daily commuters will be watching whether the project remains on schedule and whether mitigation measures can minimise disruption until the upgraded corridor becomes operational.
