The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has sealed 20 commercial units and issued notices to 153 others during a three-day enforcement drive against banned plastic use, public littering and nuisance on roads in the city’s West Zone. The Solid Waste Management Department said its teams also seized 23.1 kg of banned plastic and collected Rs 2.67 lakh in administrative charges.
The inspections were conducted during both daytime and nighttime by separate squads. A total of 239 establishments were checked across the zone, with action taken under provisions of the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations Act and public health bylaws for violations involving littering and nuisance on public roads.
Of the total administrative charges, Rs 1.24 lakh was collected for the seizure of banned plastic. A further Rs 1.43 lakh was collected from establishments facing punitive action for creating litter and nuisance. The civic action covered commercial premises in Navrangpura, Paldi, Naranpura, Sabarmati, New Ranip and other parts of the West Zone.
Navrangpura recorded the highest number of reported actions. Civic teams acted against establishments including Tej Complex, Rom Techno near Mithakhali Six Roads, Patel Auto Service and Bhim Batteries for creating dirt. Auto Centre near Nagari Hospital, United Motors, Universal Printers and Best Auto Mobile were also sealed, according to the report.
Other sealed or penalised establishments included Bansi Pasti Bhandar near HCG Hospital, New Lucky Motors near Mithakhali Six Roads, Hotel Swell on Drive-in Road and a leading restaurant on Commerce Six Roads. The action also covered a shop without a name near Commerce Six Roads for allegedly dumping construction waste on a public road.
Separate action was taken against businesses for using banned plastic. These included The Live Puff in New Ranip, Yaman Pan in Sabarmati, Bhura Tea Stall near Nagari Hospital, 1919 Pan Parlour in Naranpura, Maharaj Pan House near Darpan Circle and Maharaj Handloom in Paldi’s Pritamnagar area.
The drive places enforcement against plastic use alongside the civic body’s responsibilities for maintaining public roads and preventing commercial waste from entering shared urban spaces. The report did not specify the duration of the seals or the procedure for reopening the affected units. Further action will depend on compliance with the municipal requirements and applicable public health rules.
