Rail connectivity between western and northern India could receive a significant boost as Indian Railways prepares a proposal for a new direct train linking Ahmedabad with Varanasi. The planned service is expected to improve passenger mobility while strengthening economic, educational and tourism links between Gujarat and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
According to railway officials familiar with the proposal, the new service is planned to operate between Sabarmati in Ahmedabad and Varanasi, passing through key cities including Prayagraj, Kanpur, Agra, Jaipur and Ajmer. The route is intended to complement existing rail services while addressing growing demand for direct connectivity between the two regions. The proposed Ahmedabad Varanasi train is expected to benefit a diverse range of travellers, including business professionals, students, migrant workers, tourists and families who regularly commute between Gujarat and Purvanchal. Ahmedabad has long been a preferred destination for workers and entrepreneurs from eastern Uttar Pradesh, making reliable long-distance rail connectivity an important component of regional mobility. Transport analysts say improved intercity rail services can support economic integration by facilitating labour movement, encouraging domestic tourism and strengthening commercial exchanges between manufacturing centres and emerging markets. Better rail access may also reduce dependence on road transport for long-distance travel, contributing to lower emissions per passenger when compared with private vehicles.
For Ahmedabad, enhanced railway connectivity aligns with the city’s expanding role as a national industrial, manufacturing and logistics hub. Improved links with northern India can support supply chains, educational exchanges and healthcare travel while reinforcing the city’s position within India’s broader transport network. Railway experts also emphasise that expanding conventional rail services remains an important complement to future high-speed rail investments. While bullet train projects will connect major metropolitan centres, upgraded long-distance train services continue to provide affordable and accessible mobility for millions of passengers across the country.
The proposal is currently under consideration, with operational planning and scheduling expected to determine the timeline for launching the new Ahmedabad Varanasi train. Once introduced, the service could improve travel convenience while supporting stronger social and economic ties between Gujarat and eastern India.
