Ahmedabad: Passengers travelling between Ahmedabad and Mumbai are expected to experience temporary disruptions this week as Western Railway undertakes signalling upgrades on one of India’s busiest rail corridors. The two-day engineering programme is designed to improve operational safety and network capacity, though several premium and long-distance services will operate with revised schedules during the works.
The temporary changes are linked to infrastructure commissioning activities at Kelwe Road station in Maharashtra under the ongoing Virar–Dahanu fourth-line railway project. Railway authorities have scheduled pre-non-interlocking and non-interlocking operations to facilitate the installation of electronic interlocking equipment and the Kavach automatic train protection system, both regarded as critical components of modern railway operations. As a result, multiple services on the Ahmedabad Mumbai rail corridor will run behind schedule on 14 and 15 July. Trains affected include premium services such as Vande Bharat Express, Tejas Express and Karnavati Express, along with several long-distance trains connecting Gujarat with Maharashtra and northern India. While no widespread cancellations have been announced, passengers have been advised to verify revised departure and arrival timings before commencing their journeys. Rail infrastructure experts note that signalling upgrades often require temporary traffic blocks because new systems must be integrated and tested under controlled operating conditions before entering commercial service. Although such maintenance windows can inconvenience passengers in the short term, they are essential for improving long-term operational reliability, network efficiency and passenger safety.
The commissioning of Kavach, India’s indigenous automatic train protection technology, represents a significant step in railway modernisation. The system is designed to prevent signal overruns, reduce the risk of collisions and support safer train operations through continuous communication between locomotives and signalling infrastructure. Its phased deployment across high-density rail corridors forms part of a broader strategy to enhance safety while accommodating rising passenger and freight demand. The Virar–Dahanu fourth-line project also carries wider urban and economic significance. Expanding rail capacity on Mumbai’s northern suburban corridor is expected to reduce congestion, improve scheduling flexibility and support the movement of both suburban and long-distance trains.
