Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2B has reached a key procurement milestone with the identification of the lowest bidder for the proposed elevated extension connecting GIFT City to Shahpur Circle. The development marks another step towards expanding rapid transit infrastructure that is expected to improve access to Gujarat’s financial and technology hub while supporting sustainable urban mobility across the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar region.
The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2B project includes a 3.33-kilometre elevated corridor featuring three new metro stations designed to bring the network closer to GIFT City’s commercial core. The extension is expected to improve connectivity for office districts, financial institutions, educational campuses and emerging mixed-use developments, reducing reliance on private vehicles for daily commuting. Transport planners view the expansion as an important component of Ahmedabad’s long-term transit-oriented development strategy. By extending high-capacity public transport into one of India’s fastest-growing financial districts, the project aims to support employment growth while encouraging higher-density, mixed-use development around metro stations. The selected construction package covers a wide range of infrastructure works, including elevated viaducts, station buildings, platforms, concourses, utility relocation, parking facilities and passenger integration infrastructure. The project will also incorporate architectural finishes, public utility systems and electrical and mechanical installations to deliver fully operational metro stations.
The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2B corridor will utilise Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology during implementation, reflecting the increasing adoption of digital engineering tools in large-scale urban infrastructure projects. BIM enables improved project coordination, construction planning and asset management while helping reduce design conflicts and improving lifecycle efficiency. Urban mobility experts note that expanding metro connectivity to GIFT City can generate wider economic benefits beyond transport. Improved public transit access is expected to support commercial real estate, attract investment, strengthen labour mobility and reduce congestion on surrounding road networks as employment within the financial district continues to grow.
The extension also aligns with Ahmedabad’s broader climate and sustainability objectives by promoting low-emission public transport. Increased metro usage can contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality and reduced dependence on private automobiles, supporting national goals for sustainable urban development. With construction expected to proceed following contract finalisation, the project represents another significant investment in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metropolitan transport network.
