Ahmedabad’s railway network is set for a significant safety and technology upgrade after authorities approved the expansion of an indigenous automatic train protection system across additional sections of the division. The move is expected to extend advanced signalling safeguards to the entire 1,300 route kilometres under the Ahmedabad railway division, reinforcing efforts to modernise rail infrastructure while enhancing passenger safety and operational reliability.
The latest approval covers the deployment of Kavach 4.0 across nearly 598 route kilometres spanning 48 block sections, with an estimated investment of around ₹140 crore. Once this phase is completed, the remaining sections of the division will join approximately 702 route kilometres that have already been earmarked for the technology, resulting in comprehensive coverage across the network. The Kavach 4.0 system is India’s home-grown automatic train protection technology, designed to reduce the likelihood of human error by monitoring train movements and intervening when unsafe conditions arise. It can automatically apply brakes if required, regulate speed in critical situations and help prevent incidents where trains pass signals without authorisation, a key factor in reducing collision risks. Rail safety specialists view such investments as increasingly important as India expands its passenger and freight operations while seeking to improve punctuality and network efficiency. Automated protection systems can complement conventional signalling by creating additional layers of operational oversight, particularly on busy corridors where traffic density continues to rise.
Beyond passenger safety, the broader implications extend to sustainable transport planning. A modern and dependable railway network encourages greater public transport use, reducing dependence on private vehicles and supporting lower-carbon mobility across urban and regional corridors. Meanwhile, commuters in the region should prepare for temporary operational adjustments linked to infrastructure works. A key intercity service connecting Bhavnagar and Sabarmati is scheduled to operate only up to Gandhigram for several months because of construction activity around Sabarmati station, reflecting the short-term disruptions often associated with major railway upgrades. As implementation progresses, the full deployment of Kavach 4.0 across Ahmedabad’s rail network could become an important milestone in India’s wider efforts to create safer, smarter and more resilient public transport systems that align with long-term urban mobility and sustainability objectives.
