Ahmedabad and several major Gujarat cities are entering another phase of extreme summer stress as temperatures surge beyond 43°C, intensifying pressure on public health systems, transport networks and urban infrastructure ahead of the monsoon transition period.
According to weather officials, cities including Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Gandhinagar and Surendranagar are expected to remain under severe heatwave conditions for the next few days, with little immediate relief likely before pre-monsoon activity strengthens toward the end of May. Surendranagar recorded one of the highest temperatures in the state this season, highlighting the widening impact of prolonged heat exposure across urban and semi-urban regions. The escalating Gujarat heatwave is increasingly being viewed not only as a seasonal weather event but also as a growing urban resilience challenge. High-density residential zones, expanding concrete surfaces and limited tree cover in rapidly developing cities are contributing to rising heat retention during both day and night. Urban planners say the pattern underscores the need for climate-sensitive city design, including shaded public spaces, water-sensitive infrastructure and heat-resilient housing. Authorities have indicated that temperatures across central and western Gujarat may remain largely unchanged over the next three days. Coastal districts in Saurashtra and Kutch are also expected to experience oppressive humidity levels, worsening discomfort for residents, informal workers and transport commuters. Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to such combined heat and humidity can sharply increase risks of dehydration, heat exhaustion and respiratory complications, particularly among elderly citizens and outdoor labourers.
The extreme weather conditions are also carrying economic implications. Construction activity, logistics movement and outdoor commercial operations in several districts have started adjusting work schedules to avoid peak afternoon temperatures. Analysts tracking climate-linked economic disruptions note that recurring heatwaves are increasingly affecting productivity patterns in western India’s fast-growing urban corridors. Meteorological agencies expect a gradual shift in weather conditions from May 30 onward, with isolated thunderstorms, gusty winds and light rainfall likely in parts of Gujarat. While the anticipated pre-monsoon showers could reduce daytime temperatures marginally, experts caution that short-term cooling may not fully offset the broader trend of rising heat intensity across Indian cities.
Climate researchers have repeatedly highlighted Ahmedabad as one of India’s early adopters of heat action planning after past deadly heat events. However, the current Gujarat heatwave is again drawing attention to gaps in long-term adaptation, especially in low-income settlements where access to cooling, ventilation and reliable water supply remains uneven. Officials monitoring monsoon progression say atmospheric conditions are gradually becoming favourable for further advancement over the Arabian Sea and adjoining regions. Yet for millions across Gujarat’s urban centres, the coming days are expected to remain dominated by intense heat stress before seasonal relief begins to emerge.
