Ahmedabad Geratpur Overbridge Targets Safer Traffic Flow

Ahmedabad’s eastern transport network is set for an infrastructure upgrade with railway approval for a ₹153-crore four-lane road overbridge at Level Crossing 305 on the Geratpur–Ahmedabad section. The project is intended to remove delays caused by trains at the crossing while improving road safety and movement along one of the city’s important rail-linked corridors.

The proposed bridge will carry road traffic above the railway tracks, replacing the need for vehicles to wait for passing trains. The railway crossing sits within a densely developed urban area, where growing traffic volumes can make interruptions particularly costly for commuters, freight operators and local businesses. The structure will include a 106-metre section over the railway line, formed by two 53-metre composite girders. Extended approaches are planned to accommodate the surrounding urban conditions and provide a smoother transition between existing roads and the elevated crossing. For Ahmedabad, the project has significance beyond reducing waiting time at one railway gate. The Geratpur–Ahmedabad stretch forms part of the busy Ahmedabad–Mumbai main line, making the interaction between road and rail traffic an important infrastructure challenge. Separating the two movements can reduce conflict points and improve operational reliability for both transport modes.

The overbridge also reflects a broader shift in Ahmedabad’s infrastructure needs. As the city expands towards its peripheral areas, transport projects increasingly have to address connections between established neighbourhoods, industrial activity and emerging residential zones. Removing bottlenecks at railway crossings can improve access without requiring additional road capacity at every location. From an urban planning perspective, however, the effectiveness of the project will depend on what happens around the bridge. Safe pedestrian movement, drainage, lighting and connections with local roads will be important to ensure that the new structure does not simply shift congestion to nearby junctions. People living and working along the approaches will also need safe access during construction and after completion.

The project has been approved under an existing railway infrastructure programme covering road overbridges, underbridges and other transport-related works. It forms part of wider railway infrastructure investment taking place across Gujarat. For Ahmedabad, the Geratpur overbridge is a practical intervention in a growing urban transport system. By separating road and rail movements, it can improve journey reliability and safety while supporting more efficient movement across the city’s eastern edge. The next test will be timely execution and integration with the surrounding road network.
