Ahmedabad Freight Corridor Adds Rail Capacity

Ahmedabad: Rail infrastructure connecting Gujarat’s industrial heartland with two of India’s busiest commercial ports has moved a step closer to commissioning after safety inspections were completed on a newly expanded railway section. The project is expected to strengthen freight movement, improve operational efficiency and support the state’s growing export economy while creating additional capacity for passenger services.

The upgraded Samakhiali–Bhachau corridor has undergone statutory inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety following the completion of quadrupling works. Passenger and freight operations on the newly laid tracks will begin after regulatory approval, marking another milestone in expanding western India’s high-capacity rail network. The Ahmedabad rail upgrade forms part of broader efforts to improve connectivity between the Kutch region and the ports of Kandla and Mundra, both of which play a crucial role in India’s international trade. As cargo volumes continue to increase, expanding rail capacity is becoming essential to reducing congestion, ensuring predictable freight movement and strengthening links between manufacturing centres, logistics hubs and maritime gateways. Infrastructure developed under the project includes two additional railway lines spanning nearly 33 kilometres, alongside extensive earthworks, ballast laying and track construction. Multiple major and minor bridges have also been built, while station infrastructure at Samakhiali, Vondh and Bhachau has been expanded to accommodate higher traffic volumes and improve operational flexibility.

Transport economists say rail expansion offers significant economic advantages by enabling faster movement of bulk commodities such as containers, petroleum products, fertilisers, foodgrains and salt. Improved freight efficiency can lower logistics costs, enhance supply chain reliability and increase the competitiveness of exporters operating through Gujarat’s port network. Beyond trade, the Ahmedabad rail upgrade also aligns with wider sustainability objectives. Shifting a larger share of long-distance freight from highways to rail reduces fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and road congestion while improving the overall efficiency of the national transport system. Such investments are increasingly viewed as essential for balancing economic growth with climate-resilient infrastructure planning.

Urban and regional planners note that stronger rail connectivity can generate long-term development benefits across industrial corridors. Better logistics infrastructure often attracts warehousing, manufacturing and value-added industries, creating employment opportunities while encouraging more balanced regional economic growth beyond major metropolitan centres. However, experts emphasise that infrastructure expansion should be complemented by continued investment in digital freight management, modern signalling systems and efficient multimodal connections between rail terminals, ports and industrial clusters. These measures will be critical to maximising the benefits of increased railway capacity. With safety inspections completed and commissioning awaiting final approval, the expanded corridor is expected to play a more prominent role in supporting Gujarat’s logistics ecosystem. As trade volumes continue to rise, investments in resilient rail infrastructure will remain central to improving freight efficiency, strengthening export competitiveness and advancing sustainable transport across western India.
