Ahmedabad Drug Cases Surge 240% as Police Seize ₹42 Crore

Ahmedabad Police registered 188 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act up to October 2026, arrested 286 people and seized drugs worth more than ₹42 crore, according to figures reported by Sandesh. The data shows a sharp increase in cases compared with the same period last year, even as the city expands its anti-narcotics enforcement network.

The police recorded 55 NDPS cases up to October last year. The number rose to 188 during the corresponding period in 2026, an increase of 133 cases. Sandesh reported this as a 240% rise in police action. The figures include arrests and seizures made during an ongoing campaign against the illegal sale and movement of narcotic substances in Ahmedabad.

The enforcement effort has been distributed across the city’s 48 police stations, each of which now has a dedicated anti-narcotics cell. Around 240 police officers and personnel have been assigned to these units, according to the report. Separate anti-narcotics wings have also been established in Sector 1 and Sector 2 to strengthen surveillance and investigation.

The Special Operations Group and the Crime Branch are working alongside the police-station-level teams. The report said the agencies are conducting joint operations against drug networks operating within the city and across district boundaries. The enforcement structure is intended to identify both local distributors and larger supply chains connected to Ahmedabad.

One operation by the city SOG resulted in the seizure of hybrid cannabis valued at more than ₹7 crore in a single case. In another major operation, Ahmedabad investigators coordinated with the Surat Crime Branch and seized drugs valued at more than ₹25 crore, according to the report. The figures indicate that the police campaign is targeting supply networks as well as individual cases of possession or distribution.

The rise in registered cases does not, by itself, establish the overall scale of drug consumption in Ahmedabad. It does show a substantial increase in recorded enforcement activity. The report also said that foreign liquor and other intoxicating substances continue to be seized in the city despite the intensified campaign.

Alongside enforcement, the police have conducted 102 public-awareness programmes aimed at addressing substance abuse. More than 200 people described as drug users have also been taken up for rehabilitation efforts intended to help them return to mainstream social life.

The campaign’s next phase will involve continued action by the 48 police-station cells, the two sector-level anti-narcotics wings, the SOG and the Crime Branch. The police have identified dismantling the city’s drug networks and preventing the movement of narcotics through Ahmedabad as their continuing objectives.
