Gandhinagar: Work on extending the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway to Bhavnagar is expected to commence within the next three months, signalling the next phase of Gujarat’s expanding highway network aimed at strengthening industrial connectivity, freight movement and regional economic integration. The announcement came during a review of National Highway projects involving the Union and Gujarat governments.
The proposed Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway Extension is expected to improve connectivity between Ahmedabad, the emerging Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) and the Bhavnagar region, supporting faster movement of goods and passengers across one of Gujarat’s key industrial and logistics corridors. During the infrastructure review, transport authorities assessed progress on several major National Highway projects across the state, including highway widening, expressway upgrades and strategic freight corridors. Officials noted that continued coordination between the Centre and the state has accelerated project implementation, particularly in land acquisition and statutory clearances. The extension is expected to complement ongoing investments in Dholera, where transport infrastructure, industrial development and logistics facilities are being developed simultaneously. Urban development experts believe stronger road connectivity could improve access to manufacturing zones, ports and future urban settlements while reducing travel times between major commercial centres.
Beyond regional mobility, the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway Extension is viewed as an important component of western India’s freight network. Improved highway infrastructure can lower logistics costs, increase supply chain efficiency and strengthen connectivity between industrial clusters, export-oriented businesses and maritime gateways along Gujarat’s coastline. The review also highlighted Gujarat’s administrative approach to facilitating road infrastructure through streamlined land acquisition processes. Officials indicated that temporary suspension of certain non-agricultural permission procedures during the Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage has helped accelerate project planning and could serve as a model for infrastructure delivery elsewhere in the country.
Environmental considerations also featured during the discussions. Authorities emphasised that trees affected by highway expansion should be transplanted wherever feasible rather than removed, reflecting a growing focus on integrating ecological safeguards into large transport infrastructure projects. Urban planners increasingly advocate such measures as part of climate-resilient infrastructure development that balances mobility improvements with environmental protection. The expressway extension is expected to enhance multimodal connectivity by strengthening links between highways, industrial corridors, ports and future logistics hubs. As Gujarat continues to position itself as a manufacturing and investment destination, efficient transport infrastructure is becoming central to sustaining economic growth and supporting urban expansion beyond traditional metropolitan centres. Construction timelines will depend on project execution and statutory approvals once work begins. If completed as planned, the corridor is expected to improve regional accessibility while reinforcing Gujarat’s broader strategy of developing integrated transport networks that support industry, trade and more sustainable patterns of regional development.
