Ahmedabad: Construction of the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor has entered another critical engineering phase with tunnel boring operations advancing on the underground section in Mumbai, while civil works across Gujarat continue to move towards completion. The milestone reflects steady progress on India’s first high-speed rail project, which is expected to reshape inter-city mobility and strengthen economic connectivity between two of the country’s largest metropolitan regions.

Tunnel excavation has commenced from Vikhroli towards the future high-speed rail station at Bandra Kurla Complex using a large tunnel boring machine designed for dense urban conditions. The underground works form part of a 21-kilometre tunnel section, one of the most technically demanding segments of the 508-kilometre corridor due to its complex geology, existing urban infrastructure and proximity to sensitive built environments. Engineers are deploying specialised tunnelling technology capable of operating beneath roads, buildings and water bodies while minimising ground settlement and disruption at the surface. The project also incorporates deep launch shafts, continuous structural monitoring and advanced geotechnical systems to maintain construction safety throughout excavation. While underground work progresses in Maharashtra, construction activity in Gujarat has reached advanced stages across several packages. Viaducts, bridges, stations and track structures are nearing completion in many sections, supporting phased commissioning of the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor. The first operational stretch between Surat and Bilimora is targeted for commissioning before the full corridor becomes operational later in the decade.

Urban transport experts believe the project represents a significant shift in India’s long-term mobility strategy. High-speed rail has the potential to reduce travel times between major economic centres while encouraging a transition from short-haul air travel and long-distance road transport towards electrified, lower-emission rail services. Such modal shifts can contribute to improved energy efficiency and reduced transport-related carbon emissions. Beyond passenger mobility, planners expect the corridor to stimulate investment around station precincts, strengthen logistics and business connectivity, and support transit-oriented urban development. Improved accessibility between Gujarat and Maharashtra could also enhance labour mobility, tourism and regional economic integration across western India.

However, specialists emphasise that the long-term success of high-speed rail will depend on seamless integration with metro systems, conventional rail services and last-mile public transport. Coordinated multimodal planning will be essential to maximise accessibility while reducing dependence on private vehicles around future stations. As engineering work continues across both states, the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project remains a benchmark for India’s future high-speed rail ambitions. The experience gained through complex tunnelling, large-scale infrastructure delivery and sustainable transport planning is expected to shape the development of future corridors proposed across the country.
