Indian Railways will introduce a special train service between Ahmedabad and Patna this week to accommodate rising passenger demand on one of western and eastern India’s busiest travel corridors. The temporary service is expected to provide additional capacity during the peak travel period while improving access for passengers travelling between Gujarat and Bihar through a limited-stop schedule.
The special train will depart from Ahmedabad on 8 July and return from Patna on 10 July, operating via Kota with selected halts at major railway junctions. Railway authorities have planned the service under a demand-based operational model aimed at managing increased passenger volumes without affecting the regular timetable. The train will stop at only a limited number of stations, including Chhayapuri, Ratlam, Kota, Agra Fort, Kanpur Central and Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction before reaching Patna. By reducing intermediate halts, the service is expected to improve journey efficiency while offering passengers faster connectivity across the route. Officials indicate that travel demand between Gujarat and Bihar has remained consistently high, driven by seasonal movement of workers, students, families and business travellers. Additional train services during such periods help reduce waiting lists, improve ticket availability and ease pressure on existing long-distance trains operating on the corridor.
The service will include Second Seating, Sleeper and AC Three Tier coaches, allowing travellers to choose between affordable and higher-comfort travel options. Railway planners increasingly use such temporary services to respond to fluctuations in passenger demand while making better use of network capacity. Transport experts note that flexible scheduling of special trains plays an important role in strengthening India’s rail-based mobility system. Additional services can reduce congestion on existing routes, improve accessibility and support economic connections between major industrial and population centres without requiring immediate expansion of permanent services.
