India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper service is set to begin operations between Guwahati and Kolkata, marking a significant expansion of the country’s premium rail network into overnight long-distance travel. The new corridor is expected to strengthen mobility between the Northeast and eastern India while offering faster, fully air-conditioned travel for business passengers, students, tourists and families. The development also signals a broader shift towards modernising intercity transport infrastructure across regions that have historically faced connectivity challenges.
Unlike the existing daytime Vande Bharat services, the overnight train has been designed for extended journeys, introducing sleeper accommodation with upgraded passenger amenities. Railway officials have indicated that the 16-coach train will accommodate more than 800 passengers across different air-conditioned classes, aiming to provide a modern alternative to conventional overnight express services. The project follows extensive trial runs that demonstrated the train’s operational capabilities and onboard safety systems before commercial deployment.For the Northeast, the Vande Bharat Sleeper represents more than an additional train service. The train is expected to incorporate enhanced ride comfort through improved suspension, ergonomically designed berths, modern passenger information systems and upgraded sanitation facilities. Safety technologies, including India’s indigenous collision avoidance system and advanced braking mechanisms, reflect the railways’ increasing focus on passenger security alongside operational efficiency. These improvements align with ongoing efforts to modernise public transport while encouraging greater use of rail, which generally produces lower carbon emissions per passenger than road or air travel over comparable distances.Industry observers note that improved connectivity between Guwahati and Kolkata could generate wider economic benefits for logistics, hospitality and regional commerce. The launch also marks the beginning of a larger expansion programme for overnight premium rail services. Railway authorities have indicated that additional Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are planned for other long-distance corridors as production gathers pace.
